I have a 4 year-old granddaughter whose Head Start experience has helped her to integrate socially, improve her reading skills, and learn arithmetic fundamentals before she ever gets to kindergarten. Studies show conclusively that she will be among children that are best prepared for academic success.
I use to work in fast food. I know first hand what it’s like to work at a low paying job, and having to decide between paying bills or buying groceries. The young women in this country, especially, the single mothers, depend on these programs. It’s up to us to do everything we can to prevent these programs from being cut.

Many years ago I was a Head Start teacher in upstate NY. I soon realized that many of these children were sorely neglected at home, often because the parents worked or were too tired from working to interact much with the children. This realization made my job even more significant as I endeavored to enrich the lives of these kids as much as I possibly could. Some of the helpers were not interested in actually working with the children, just supervising their play and reprimanding them on occasion. Dedicated and effective Head Start teachers can make a huge and remarkable difference in the lives of the children enrolled.

All children learn from babyhood and need to be talked with, read stories and play creatively. As an educator of over 50 years, I can attest to the learning gained through head start. The positive effects of going to head start stay with the individual throughout her life.
In a country where equality is supposed to be paramount, why should
the rich be the only ones to get a head start in life?

Saving head start means helping working families and ensuring that every child starts kindergarten on an even playing field, with early literacy skills and social skills and a budding love of learning.
Stop the sequester and save Head Start!
As a teacher and a parent of an adult daughter with autism and recursive seizures, I recognize the importance of early services to our little folks. Please do not turn your back on our future. -Debra from Burlington, NC
As a bus driver for Head Start years ago, I saw the improvement in the
children and the help for overburdened parents. It is an essential program for ensuring that all of our children become useful adults.

I am a volunteer story reader in an Oakland Head Start center working primarily with latino kids. For many of these kids, pictured here at their “graduation,” Head Start is the only access they have to books. Don’t cut Head Start.

This past summer, I volunteered to help a Speech Language Pathologist in my local school district. We worked with children from 3-5 years old. Head start is such an important program to serve children from underprivileged households. It is precisely these students that show the most delays. It is essential to provide these kids with a leg up to be successful in elementary school.

My stepdaughter could have benefited from early childhood education and she is just one of millions of kids who deserve a better chance.

The $85 billion in across-the-board budget cuts, known as the sequester, has had a devastating impact on Head Start, a program that helps children grow into healthy and productive adults.
Head Start was cut by $400 million in 2013, denying services to over 57,000 children. Meanwhile, corporations continue to receive a special tax break worth $370 million a year for owning private jets.
Congress has a choice. This photo petition was started by Head Start teachers, parents and supporters who all agree that instead of proposing more cuts, Congress should close corporate tax loopholes as a way to raise revenue and restore vital services.
